How to Knit Interactive Video
Over 17 minutes in length, the interactive
video tightly coordinates with the accompanying descriptive write-up
(including contextual hypertext), below the movie screen, and
the hyperlinked video topic selection control to the right of
the video screen. The video can be paused at any point, and the
slider (beneath the video screen) allows frame-by-frame, stop-action
video control. If played through, the topic list to the right
automatically updates to reflect what is being covered in the
movie. The descriptive field at the bottom also changes -- keeps
pace -- with the video as it plays. To view a particular movie
topic at random, just click it in the list to the right (in the
actual program; not the picture copy of it shown here on
this Website), and the movie plays from that point. The descriptive
field at the bottom will also automatically move to that point
at the same time.

Knitting Projects
- The Program features 5 knitting projects
that apply key techniques shown in the How to Knit video
and in the Glossary.
- Longhand pattern descriptions are given,
below an image of the sample, as well as a shorthand pattern
version to the right, that can be copied and pasted into your
favorite word processor for print-out or notetaking. A handy
yellow button brings up a Glossary of Abbreviations and frequently
used knitting terms. Where appropriate, Glossary entries have
short video clips and photographs to help you master knitting
concepts. A magnifying tool allows you to see greater detail
in the knitting example. For patterns that have distinct differences
between sides, a "flip" button appears to allow you
to easily inspect both sides of the sample, at either
a regular view or under magnification.

Review
- HOW TO KNIT: WINDOWS®
CD-ROM, by Robert
Bush and Nora Dearborn. Robert Bush, P.O. Box 829, Waterford,
CT 06385. 2000. CD-ROM. Approximately 30 minutes. $29.00, plus
shipping & handling.
-
- Do you want to learn how
to knit? Are you at the very first stages of wanting to learn
to knit or would you like to learn to knit in the continental
style? Are you computer active? If your answer to all three questions
is yes, then the How to Knit: Windows® CD-ROM is for
you. This program, which runs on a basic Windows® multimedia
PC, is easily installed and requires only a modest 15 Mb free
hard disk space.
How to Knit is designed for the absolute beginner or for someone
who would like to learn to knit in the continental style. A short
video clip (with voice-over instructions if you have a SoundBlaster®
compatible sound card and speakers) accompanies each step from
the very first step of picking up the needles and yarn through
descriptions of each process. Still photographs always leave
it to the reader as to how the yarn gets from one place in photograph
A to another place in photograph B. Video clips solve the problem.
Another advantage of the video clips is that a student can review
multiple times any given step until he or she is ready for the
next step and, of course, return for refresher reminders as needed.
There is nothing more frustrating for beginners than to think
they understand the process while a teacher is standing by and
then realize, on their own, that something is not working. The
CD solves this problemit is like having a private tutor
on call at all times.
For anyone used to finding information via pull down menus on
a tool bar, this program is exceptionally easy to follow. The
tool bar allows you to choose between How to Knit, which shows the basic steps, Projects, which outlines several
basic projects, Problems, which shows you how to
solve problems that may be encountered in your knitting, Glossary that defines terms that
may be unfamiliar to the beginning knitter, Notebook
that calls up a Windows® notebook feature from within the
How to Knit program, and Help, which tells about
the programmers and repeats the information that is printed in
the leaflet that accompanies the CD. If the knitter cannot find
the help needed from the program, the authors have kindly included
an e-mail contact in both the leaflet and the program.
Most how to books take the student quickly from the
very basic to more intermediate levels and assumes that the learner
will have other ways of supplementing the learning process. This
CD is completely self-contained. If you know nothing about knitting
and you want to learn, this CD will allow you to be a knitter.
Also, if you know someone who would like to learn to knit and
who is c omputer active, How to Knit: Windows® CD-ROM would
make a great gift.
